Introduction

THE World Heritage Committee meeting in Quebec City added George Town to UNESCO’s World Heritage List on the morning of 7 July 2008.

George Town's built heritage comprises architectural traditions adapted to local conditions from both East and West. Its historic core has the largest concentration of pre-World War II architecture in Southeast Asia. Over the last 222 years, a unique way of life based upon East-West exchanges has developed here. The influences of Asia and Europe have endowed the city with a specific multicultural heritage.

To celebrate George Town’s living heritage and cultural diversity, the State Government is proud to inaugurate the first Penang Cultural Fest (PCF2008) from 4-8 December, 2008. This event will see collaboration among the State Government, heritage specialists, non-governmental organisations and individuals, local and foreign corporations, artists, musicians and chefs to deliver Penang’s cultural diversity at its best.

PCF2008 will coincide with and complement the month-long Pesta Pulau Pinang (Penang Festival) in December by providing interesting activities at the heart of George Town within the Heritage Core Zone.

Objectives

The main objectives of the Penang Cultural Fest are to:

Revitalise the heritage enclave through a comprehensive festival event that will move to different locations annually
Provide a five-year framework to stimulate Penang’s “creative” sector particularly the performing arts, visual arts and musical tradition. Special attention is also given to the traditional arts and local food
Give local artists a platform to promote and market their work
Bring in international quality acts to encourage intercultural exchanges and improve standards

Promote the concept of sustainable development within the corporate sector via international conferences and educational programmes

To achieve these objectives and as proof of concept, a number of projects were drawn up, each with its own objectives, co-organisers and corporate sponsors. This strategy will ensure a “win-win” situation for all parties. Please refer to programme.
